Workshop: Inequalities in working life

An interdisciplinary workshop hosted by the Department of Sociology and Uppsala Center for Labor Studies, Uppsala University

November 30 – December 1, 2023

Location: Uppsala University

Aim and Scope

Today’s labor market is changing, generating new possibilities as well as challenges for various societal groups. Unequal treatment, conditions and systematic differences in opportunities and outcomes have long been studied in all social science fields but using different frameworks and approaches. To understand the social phenomenon of inequalities connected to work more thoroughly, there is a need to break disciplinary insularity. We invite paper submissions from all social sciences, focusing on inequalities in working life departing from different theories and a variety of methodological approaches. Important questions include sources of gender occupational segregation and pay gaps, migration and labor market policies, and the role of socioeconomic status and labor relations. We welcome contributions. The workshop aims to bring together scholars across fields to provide a broader understanding of inequalities in today’s labor market and to lay better foundations for labor market policy.

The local organizing committee will construct a number of sessions composed of 2-3 papers) of papers with similar topics but different approaches to initiate in-depth discussions within and across social science fields. Each session will be assigned a person to moderate the discussion after the presentation of the papers.
