The Swedish Research Council has decided that professor Sujata Patel at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, will be the holder of the 2021 Kerstin Hesselgren visiting professorship. Professor Sujata Patel will be active mainly at the Department of Sociology at Umeå University. The Department of Sociology at Uppsala University has contributed to the nomination of Sujata Patel.

Postdoktor till projektet JUSTEMOTIONS
Sociologiska institutionen söker en postdoktor till projektet JUSTEMOTIONS: The Construction of Objectivity: An international perspective on the emotive-cognitive process of judicial decision-making. Projektet finansieras av Europeiska forskningsrådet (ERC). Arbetet inbegriper att samla in data vid domstolar och åklagarmyndigheter på olika nivåer (tingsrätt och hovrätt), att sammanställa och koda ny och redan insamlad data, samt att analysera och publicera resultaten.

Erika Willander tilldelas Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societetens Benzeliusbelöning
Den 3 september 2019 tilldelades Erika Willander, verksam som forskare vid sociologiska institutionen, Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsalas Benzeliusbelöning. Willander erhöll priset för sitt ”bidrag till teoribildning inom religionssociologi samt sina innovativa och sofistikerade analyser av religionens betydelse.”

Professor Sandra Torres was elected the Chair of the Socio-Behavioral Section and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics- European Region. The goal of this organization, among others, is to promote international gerontological research across disciplines and training of qualified personnel in the field of aging.

Joscha Legewie is awarded the Hans L. Zetterberg prize for his innovative studies within classic and central fields in sociology, including, race, education, and criminology. Joscha Legewie is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Harvard University.

Vacancy: Two year postdoctoral position
This two year postdoctoral position is part of an international and interdisciplinary research project JUSTEMOTIONS; The Construction of Objectivity: An international perspective on the emotive-cognitive process of judicial decision-making. The project is financed by the European Research Council (ERC). The first year of the postdoctoral position will be spent collecting data in the US. Working with Professor Terry Maroney of Vanderbilt, the postdoc will collect data at state courts and prosecution offices of different levels (lower, appeal) and in different states. Travel costs are covered by the project. The position is full-time and includes benefits through Uppsala University (see link at bottom of this page about working for Uppsala University).

Two Professors elected for Research Committees
Researchers at the Department of Sociology play active roles in international professional organizations. Two of the researchers at the department were elected to key positons during the World Congress of Sociology that took place in Toronto in July. Professor emerita Hedvig Ekerwald was elected as Vice President of the Research Committee on History of Sociology(RC-08) while Professor Sandra Torres was elected President of the Research Committee on Aging (RC-11). The department continues, in other words, to be put on the sociological map.

Video on research on old age social exclusion
Our researchers are part of a variety of international networks. Prof. Sandra Torres, for example, is a member of the COST-funded European network ROSEnet. Networks such as this work towards doing inventories of the state of affairs of research in an area, and try to influence policy makers working on those areas to make decisions that are research-informed.

The research group Cultural Matters at the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University, is arranging a symposium 27-28 September. Submit your abstract to disconnection@soc.uu.se no later than June 18, 2018. Keynote speakers are Annette Markham (Aarhus University and Loyola University) and Adam Fish (Lancaster University). Artist Mako Ishizuka will put her thoughts on the themes of the symposium into a mind-map on site, in dialogue with the symposium participants.

In his review of the first English-language Ukrainian work on the so-called volunteer battalions, Käihkö highlights the relationship between state, nation and war, central to the sociological study of armed conflict.

Ledig tjänst: Administratör med intresse för ekonomi
Sociologiska institutionen vid Uppsala universitet befinner sig i en spännande förändring. Institutionen växer och har nyligen blivit värdinstitution för det nyinrättade CESAR - Centrum för Socialt arbete. Samtidigt sker även satsningar på internationalisering i form av internationella rekryteringar, utbytesavtal och EU-finansierade forskningsprojekt. Institutionen har idag ett sextiotal anställda forskare, lärare, och administratörer samt omkring femhundra studenter varje termin. Ett trettiotal doktorander är inskrivna vid institutionens forskarutbildning varav huvuddelen även ingår i de anställda vid institutionen. Vi behöver nu förstärka bemanningen med ytterligare en administratör till den institutionsgemensamma administrativa enhet som för närvarande består av sju personer. Vi söker därför dig som vill vara med oss på resan att utveckla nya arbetsformer och bidra till ett välfungerande samarbete mellan de olika delarna av institutionen.
