Economizing the Non-Economic in Contemporary Society

Levels, Manifestations, and Effects

The economization of contemporary society, especially of non-economic sub-systems such as health care, education, art, or science, has been a hot topic of public debates as well as a subject of many empirical studies. Some of the relevant keywords of political discussions are “liberalization”, “deregulation”, “privatization”, “managerialism”, “new public management”, “entrepreneurialism” and, above all, “neoliberalism”. Uwe Schimank will give an overview of relevant analytical dimensions to describe and explain commonalities as well as varieties of economization in various societal sub-systems.

Uwe Schimank is professor of Sociological Theory at the University of Bremen, Germany. He took his Ph D exam and Habilitation at Bielefeld University and he has been researcher at the Max-Planck institute in Köln and CSO-CNRS in Paris, visiting fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra, and professor at Fern Universität in Hagen, Germany. His interests are sociological theory, in particular theories of modern society, organizational and economic sociology, science studies and higher education research.
