Sociological perspectives on the management of antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic misuse

Primary investigator: Hedvig Gröndal, MSsc

Project description: This dissertation project aims to examine policies intended to prevent antimicrobial resistance, and more specifically, policies intended to prevent misuse of antibiotics in relation to management of everyday infections in health care. The project uses different materials collected from different sites: for example interviews with heath personnel, observations from medical practice and text material. Drawing on sociological theory as well as scholarship from the field of science and technology studies, the project investigates policy in practice. It especially focuses on how policies takes form and change due to the complex interactions of humans and non-humans–for example medical personnel, microbes, medical technologies and knowledge. Thereby the project provides important insights on how policies aimed to prevent antimicrobial resistance actually work.

Grants: The project is funded via a faculty financed doctoral position awarded to the Department of Sociology by Uppsala University’s Faculty of Social Sciences
