International Migration and Ethnic Relations, IMER
In Fall 2007, Department of Sociology at Uppsala University initiated an interdisciplinary forum for debate on issues of International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER).
IMER research focuses on population movements between countries together with ethnic relations in native- and receiving countries as a result of these movements. Studies within IMER include thus issues of immigration, emigration, re-migration, integration as well as exclusion/alienation- processes, identity-formation within multiethnic societies, migration politics, nationalism, citizenship, and all types of interactions originating from meetings between people belonging to different ethnic groups.
It is vital to stress that IMER is here approached as an extensive idea, which does not rest on any specific theoretical perspective. Instead, the concept of IMER at the Department of Sociology (UU) is aimed to include different theoretical and disciplinary trends and ideas within the area of international migration and ethnic relations. The ambition of IMER Seminar Series is thus a collective, interdisciplinary production of knowledge on the subject and an invigoration of an interdepartmental dialogue.
IMER Seminar Series have therefore two purposes:
- To be a forum for debate within the area of IMER. The seminar series intend also to open the debate for the actors from outside of the university, such as people from the private and public sector, who are interested in and wish to contribute to the current discussion.
- To be an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of scientific texts. The authors are then offered the opportunity to publish their work (articles, book reviews, etc.) within the framework of IMER Seminar Report Series.
The IMER Seminar Series facilitates an interdepartmental dialogue and makes it possible to arrange joint conferences, guest lectures, as well as publication of current research in IMER Seminar Report Series.
