Presentation

The basic and advanced education at the Department of Sociology encompasses Sociology, Social Psychology, Sociology oriented towards working life, organization and personnel (AOP),Sociology with orientation towards Social Work and Sociology oriented towards social care, at A, B, C, D and master level.

The department is hosting the faculty programs for Social work and the Program oriented towards personnel and working life issues. The department also offers courses included in faculty programs hosted by other departments such as the program in Psychology, the Social care program oriented towards children and youth, the Social Science program and the Planning program. The department is also responsible for teaching sociology in the Teachers training program.

The teaching activities consist of lectures, lessons, supervision, group work and seminars. Practical exercises are included. Participation at seminar is, as a rule, compulsory. Some courses and parts of courses are studied jointly by students from the different disciplines.

The education is based on the student’s own activity and engagement with the learning process. This means that a large part of the studies are self-directed and group work is complementing teacher directed education. That the student develops an ability for critical reflection, is a goal throughout all courses.

Examination may be exercised by a written test, written assignments and contribution to seminars. When examination takes the form of written assignments, in order  to pass, supplementary examination may be asked for, but only one time and to be delivered within ten days. When the examination is a written test new opportunities are offered.

The students’ evaluation of the education is of utmost importance to the department and a precondition for the continuing improvement of the quality of education. That the students actively contribute by presenting their ideas and judgments both continuously and in the final evaluation of a course is therefore crucial.

The former undergraduate education has been re-organized since Sweden decided to implement the so called Bologna process intended to homogenize higher education within Europe. The education now has two levels: basic and advanced level in addition to the PhD program.
