How we understand the dynamics of our economy and society increasingly demands multifaceted and interdisciplinary perspective. This interdisciplinary Master programme brings together some of the most important approaches to understanding the economic world around us and is designed for those who want to draw connections across the social and economic sciences in order to better understand economic phenomena.

The programme is a unique collaboration between Business Studies, Economic Geography, Economic Sociology and Economic History.

Why this programme?

The Master programme in Social Analysis of Economy and Organisation has four specialisations:

  • Economic history
  • Business Studies
  • Human Geography
  • Sociology
As a student, you will study together with students from other specialisations within the programme. Reading courses and essays will be tailored to the specialisation you choose.


The programme leads to a Master in Social Science (60 credits) with Sociology, Economic History, Business Studies or Social and Economic Geography as the main field of study.


The Master programme is based on courses of 7.5 credits each.

First semester
The first semester emphasises skills training where students are trained in academic and work-related generic skills. The focus is on academic writing, analysis, communication and presentation.

Second semester
During the last semester there is a series of integration tutorials that are organised in small groups. Each such group has regular meetings during the semester. The intention is to create a forum for interdisciplinary discussion and encourage thinking across disciplinary boundaries.

Learning experience

The programme offers a coherent course package. Great emphasis is placed on the skills of writing, framing and analysis, and students get to do practical analysis, group work and course-spanning projects. Teachers and students participate in tutorials and seminars where skills are practiced and offer opportunities for close contact with researchers. The programme's interdisciplinary cooperation enables the integration of teaching with on-going research at the University.

The programme is taught in English and is offered in Uppsala. 


The programme prepairs students for a career as an academic and senior analyst. The programme focuses on research and provides training for a career including skilled analysis for example in investigative consulting firms and government agencies. The programme also prepares you and formally qualifies students for postgraduate study.
